Learn how to assess light, watering needs and drainage to help common indoor plants thrive rather than just survive.
Indoor plants die most often from one of three things: too much water, not enough light, or a pot that never dries out. Fix those three and most plants will reward you.
Water less than you think
A finger pushed an inch into the soil is the best gauge. Wait until it comes out dry before watering again.
Light comes from the side
South-facing windows are bright. East is gentler. North and shaded rooms need plants that tolerate low light — snake plants, pothos, ZZ.
Drainage is non-negotiable
If your pot has no holes, use it as a decorative outer pot and plant into a smaller plastic pot that does.
Dust the leaves
Clean leaves catch more light. A damp cloth every month does more than any spray.
